Education is the foundation of a nation’s progress, yet many children in Rwanda still face the risk of dropping out of school. While economic challenges and social barriers play a role, one critical factor often overlooked is parental mindset. Parents are the first influencers in a child’s life, and their attitudes toward education can determine whether a child stays in school or leaves prematurely. Changing these mindsets is essential to breaking the dropout cycle and ensuring every child has the opportunity to learn and thrive.

Why Parent Mindsets Matter

Parents who value education are more likely to invest time, resources, and emotional support in their children’s schooling. Conversely, when parents view education as optional or secondary to household labor, children are at greater risk of dropping out. In rural communities, misconceptions such as “education is only for the wealthy” or “girls don’t need schooling” still persist. These beliefs not only limit children’s opportunities but also perpetuate poverty across generations.

Our Role Through the LIFT Project

The LIFT Project, in partnership with local authorities, schools, and community organizations, is working to transform parental attitudes toward education. Our interventions include:

These efforts aim to shift mindsets from viewing education as a burden to recognizing it as an investment in the family’s future.

Impact of Changing Mindsets

When parents understand the value of education, dropout rates decline significantly. Children feel supported and motivated, while communities experience improved literacy and economic growth. In areas where the LIFT Project has implemented parental engagement programs, we have seen increased school attendance and stronger collaboration between families and schools.

The Way Forward

Transforming mindsets is not an overnight process—it requires consistent engagement, trust-building, and community involvement. The LIFT Project will continue to expand its outreach, strengthen partnerships, and develop innovative strategies to ensure that every parent becomes an advocate for education. Together, we can create a future where no child is left behind.
