At the Rwanda Organization for Development Initiatives (RODI), in partnership with the Gold Youth Programme Agency, we are shaping the next generation of ethical and empowered leaders through our Peer Education Programme. This initiative is active in Ruhango District, specifically in Byimana and Ruhango sectors, and works closely with schools such as GS Ruhango Catholique, GS Muyange, and GS Bukomero.
Why Peer Education Matters
Peer education is a proven approach to youth development. According to UNESCO, peer-led programs foster trust, engagement, and positive behavior change more effectively than traditional top-down models. By empowering students to lead and mentor their peers, we create a ripple effect of influence that extends beyond classrooms into entire communities.
How the Programme Works
Our Peer Education Programme is structured to ensure sustainability and progressive leadership development:
- Junior Peer Educators (S4 students): Begin their journey by learning foundational leadership and communication skills.
- Senior Peer Educators (S5 students): Take on greater responsibilities, facilitating sessions and mentoring juniors.
- Mentors (S6 students): Guide both juniors and seniors, ensuring knowledge transfer and program continuity.
This tiered system ensures that leadership skills are cultivated progressively, and every cohort leaves behind a legacy of empowered peers.
Our Support Structure
At the heart of the program are Facilitator Interns, guided by a Site Coordinator. They:
- Train and mentor peer educators.
- Provide life skills and leadership sessions.
- Monitor progress and ensure quality standards.
Through this structure, we guarantee that every peer educator receives the guidance and resources needed to succeed.
What We Teach
Our curriculum focuses on:
- Life Skills: Communication, decision-making, and problem-solving.
- Ethical Leadership: Integrity, accountability, and responsibility.
- Community Engagement: Encouraging students to initiate projects that address local challenges.
- Personal Development: Building confidence, resilience, and self-esteem.
Outcomes from the Programme
The impact of our Peer Education Programme is visible:
- Increased student confidence and participation in school governance.
- Reduction in behavioral issues through peer-led counseling.
- Stronger community-school linkages as students initiate local projects.
- Graduates (Gold Grads) who mentor the next generation, ensuring sustainability.
Looking Ahead
We aim to expand this program to more schools and districts, integrate digital tools for peer learning, and strengthen partnerships with local and international organizations. Our vision is clear: to create a Rwanda where youth lead with purpose and integrity.
