n Rwanda’s journey toward sustainable development, leadership is not just a position—it is a responsibility nurtured from a young age. We believe that empowering youth to lead today ensures a stronger, more resilient Rwanda tomorrow. That is why the Rwanda Organization for Development Initiatives (RODI), in partnership with the Gold Youth Programme, is investing in the next generation of leaders through an innovative Peer Education Programme in Ruhango District.

Why Peer Education Matters

Peer education is a powerful approach to youth development. It fosters trust, engagement, and behavioral change more effectively than traditional top-down models. By empowering young people to lead and mentor their peers, we create a ripple effect of positive influence that extends beyond classrooms into entire communities.

The Gold Youth Model in Rwanda

The Gold Youth Programme focuses on equipping young people with life skills, leadership qualities, and ethical values. In Rwanda, this program is active in Ruhango District, specifically in Byimana and Ruhango sectors, where we collaborate with schools such as:

– GS Ruhango Catholique

– GS Muyange

– GS Bukomero

Through this partnership, we aim to transform ordinary students into extraordinary leaders who can drive social change.

How the Programme Works

The Peer Education Programme is structured to ensure sustainability and progressive leadership development. Here’s how we make it happen:

1. Structured Leadership Pathway

Junior Peer Educators (S4 students): These students begin their journey by learning foundational leadership and communication skills.

Senior Peer Educators (S5 students): They take on greater responsibilities, facilitating sessions and mentoring juniors.

Mentors (S6 students): The final stage, where students guide both juniors and seniors, ensuring knowledge transfer and program continuity.

This tiered system ensures that leadership skills are cultivated progressively, and every cohort leaves behind a legacy of empowered peers.

2. Facilitators and Site Coordinators

At the heart of the program are our Facilitator Interns, guided by a Site Coordinator. They train, mentor, and support peer educators, ensuring that the program maintains high standards of quality and impact. We provide:

– Training sessions on life skills, ethics, and leadership

– Mentorship to help students navigate challenges

– Monitoring and evaluation to track progress and outcomes

Building Confidence and Character

We go beyond academics. Our program focuses on:

Ethical leadership: Instilling values of integrity and accountability

Community engagement: Encouraging students to initiate projects that address local challenges

– Personal development: Building self-esteem, communication skills, and resilience

We are not just training leaders for tomorrow; we are shaping responsible citizens for today.

Sustainability Through Peer Selection

One of the program’s most innovative features is its self-sustaining model. Each year, graduating mentors (S6) select the next generation of S4 students to join as junior peer educators. This ensures continuity and ownership, making the program a permanent fixture in participating schools.

Impact in Ruhango District

The results speak for themselves:

– Increased student confidence and participation in school governance

– Reduction in behavioral issues through peer-led counseling

– Stronger community-school linkages as students initiate local projects
