Rwanda’s journey towards sustainable development is deeply intertwined with the prosperity of its rural communities. A key driver in this progress is cooperatives’ strategic support and development, which serve as powerful vehicles for economic growth and improved livelihoods. The Rwanda Organization for Development Initiatives (RODI), a dedicated non-profit, is crucial in harnessing “The Power of Cooperatives” to strengthen rural economies nationwide.
RODI envisions a thriving community where everyone has access to the knowledge and resources necessary for achieving a better quality of life. To realize this vision, a core part of our mission is to strengthen the capacity of small-scale farmers, youth, and women to improve livelihoods, food security, and increase economic opportunities. A significant way we achieve this is through fostering cooperative development.
What RODI Supports in Cooperative Development:

RODI understands that successful cooperatives are built on a foundation of strong organization, shared knowledge, and equitable access to resources. Therefore, our support focuses on several critical areas:
- Creation and Restructuring of Farmer Cooperatives: We actively support the creation of new farmer cooperatives and the restructuring existing ones for community development. This ensures that these vital economic units are well-organized, efficient, and truly serve the needs of their members.
- Advocacy and Training: RODI empowers smallholder farmers to address poverty and food insecurity challenges through advocacy and various trainings. These trainings are crucial for equipping cooperative members with the skills they need to thrive.
- Access to Production Resources and Markets: A significant barrier for small-scale farmers is access to necessary production resources and viable markets for their produce. RODI helps bridge this gap, ensuring cooperatives can efficiently produce and sell their goods.
- Diversification of Income Sources: To build resilience, RODI encourages and supports the diversification of income sources within cooperatives, reducing reliance on a single crop or activity.
- Technical Assistance in Agricultural Value Chain: We provide crucial technical assistance throughout the agricultural value chain, helping cooperatives optimize their processes from cultivation to market. This includes support for adaptation to climate change, a critical factor for agricultural sustainability.
- Entrepreneurship Development: Beyond agricultural production, we foster an entrepreneurial mindset and support the development of entrepreneurial skills within cooperatives, particularly among youth and women, to unlock new economic opportunities.
Impactful Projects Demonstrating Cooperative Power:
RODI’s commitment to strengthening cooperatives is reflected in our project portfolio:
- Improving the Capability of Smallholder Coffee Farmers’ Cooperatives (ICCC): This completed initiative was specifically designed to improve the operational efficiency and sustainability of smallholder coffee farmers’ cooperatives, directly contributing to Rwanda’s vital coffee sector. This program also increased the capacity of 25 farmer organizations over three years, promoting value chain development and equitable economic growth [1].
- Business Development Service Support to Value Chain Development and Fair Economic Development Program: This program aimed to increase the capacity of farmer organizations and promote equitable economic growth in Rwanda[2].
Through these comprehensive interventions, RODI helps cooperatives become more than just groups of individuals; they become powerful, self-reliant entities that can collectively address challenges, seize opportunities, and drive economic prosperity within their rural communities. The power of cooperatives, nurtured by organizations like RODI, is indeed a cornerstone of Rwanda’s sustainable development.
