At the heart of sustainable development lies the empowerment of a community’s most dynamic forces: its youth and women. In Rwanda, the Rwanda Organization for Development Initiatives (RODI) stands as a dedicated non-profit committed to fostering sustainable development, with a significant focus on strengthening the capacity of these vital groups. Since its creation in 2012 and recognition by the Government of Rwanda in 2014, RODI has been working towards a vision of a thriving community where everyone has access to the knowledge and resources necessary for a better quality of life.
Why Youth and Women?

RODI’s mission explicitly aims to strengthen the capacity of small-scale farmers, youth, and women to improve livelihoods, food security, and increase economic opportunities. The organization recognizes that investing in these demographics can create a ripple effect of positive change throughout communities.
RODI’s Multi-Faceted Approach to Empowerment:

RODI employs a range of programs designed to address the specific needs and challenges faced by youth and women in Rwanda:
- Livelihood and Rural Development: RODI works to enhance sustainable Income Generating Activities (IGAs) and improve rural community incomes. This includes providing technical, vocational, and managerial training, facilitating market access, and linking youth to job opportunities to improve their quality of life and economic well-being. A key intervention is to create a business mindset and behavior, particularly among youth and women.
- Gender Equality and Equity Promotion: Recognizing the importance of equal opportunities, RODI empowers women and girls to advocate for themselves through trainings like the Gender Action Learning System (GALS), providing resources, and conducting awareness campaigns. These efforts help women and girls build confidence, start businesses, and take on community leadership roles.
- Youth and Women Empowerment (Dedicated Program): This program equips youth and women explicitly with the skills, resources, and mentorship needed to create jobs and lead meaningful lives. RODI supports entrepreneurship and vocational training and facilitates access to financial resources for sustainable growth.
Impact in Action: Completed and Ongoing Projects

RODI’s commitment to youth and women’s empowerment is evident in its various projects:
- Poverty Alleviation Coalition (PAC 1) & MFASHA KWIFASHA HUGUKA DUKORE AKAZI KANOZE: These completed projects focused on improving youth economic opportunities and their active participation in community transformation. One project specifically equipped vulnerable youth across Rwanda with market-relevant skills, work readiness, and job capabilities, aligning with Rwanda’s Vision 2020 by fostering economic growth.
- Engaging Youth in Community Decision-Making in Nyanza District: This project built the confidence and self-belief of youth and women, encouraging them to make positive career choices and actively participate in community development.
- Peer Education Program (RODI Gold Youth Programme) in Ruhango District: An ongoing initiative, this program embeds peer leaders and mentors within schools and communities. It aims to develop young people into proactive agents of positive change, empowering themselves and their peers to become ethical and economically independent leaders.
- Develop and Deliver Business Development Support Services to Starting Micro and Small Enterprises: This ongoing project empowers youth by providing Business Development Support Services (BDS) in three districts. It includes a structured training program on entrepreneurship, financial management, and market linkages, aiming to create at least two jobs per trainee and assist with loan access.
A Partnership Approach
RODI’s success stems from its approach. They actively engage with local communities to understand their needs, ensuring that initiatives like Gender Equality and Equity Promotion and Youth and Women Empowerment resonate with the target populations and foster active participation. The organization is also committed to strengthening capacity through technical, vocational, and managerial skills, empowering individuals to control their own futures. Furthermore, RODI believes in the power of collaboration, partnering with organizations like World Vision and USAID to enhance its capacity and leverage resources effectively.
Through these comprehensive programs and dedicated efforts, RODI is truly unlocking the potential of youth and women, paving the way for a more prosperous and equitable future in Rwanda.
